BODYGUARD Product Review: Sprawl Shorts

For this issues product review we have chosen The Flex Fighter shorts from Sprawl Fight Short Co. These shorts have just recently hit the market and are already being worn by martial grapplers and fighters all around the globe and for good reason.

So after hearing a lot of good things about them I decided to give them a try.

The first thing I noticed when I got my shorts was the style. They could easily pass for a pair of board shorts and can actually be used for swimming without being ruined. “So why not just wear board shorts,” I thought. Well, I soon found out that they weren't just a pair of board shorts with a sprawl logo. The Flex Fighter shorts have had some serious effort and technology put into them and I could tell just by looking at them. I examined them for a while longer and then decided to throw them on.

I had already done some research on the shorts and found out that the vision behind them was to combine the mobility of the Lycra shorts commonly seen in MMA with the comfort and coverage of board shorts. I noticed just that when I put them on. They aren't quite as baggy as some board shorts and don't feel like their riding as low as Paris Hilton's jeans either. They felt as though they were tight enough to stay put under tough conditions and wouldn't get twisted around and rip my cup out of place, which isn't the greatest experience. However, they still had plenty of room in the legs to feel comfortable and look casual. After throwing a few high kicks and throwing my groin out of place I decided it was time to quit prancing around the office and get on the mat.

I gave my partner specific instructions: “No submissions. Just try to shred these shorts!” Good thing they lived up to the claims. My partner shot in and got a hold of the shorts and pulled with every-thing he had. He got the takedown but the shorts were okay. I was surprised that they didn't even budge. The Flex Fighter shorts have a waistband that I never had a problem with coming undone. One of the coolest things is what Sprawl calls the Cross-Side Waistband. The tie is off centered so it never digs into your stomach like many other shorts do. The tie also hooks through the Velcro strip to hold it in place and then the knots go on the inside, making it impossible for you or your opponent to get your fingers caught which could lead to a broken or dislocated finger. These features really allow you to just focus on fighting instead of worrying about your shorts.

The next thing I noticed about the shorts was the range of motion I had. From the guard, my opponent was able to pass and easily stack my legs clear above my head without the shorts even feeling tight. The shorts have an elastic material sewn in that runs from the crotch down to the knees. This allowed for a wide range of mobility. Often times when I'd workout out in board shorts I'd hit a certain point and that was it, the shorts wouldn't go any farther. Not having enough range of motion could actually cost you a match or points. Just look at the guard work of some of the greats. Often times it is their flexibility that allows them to do certain moves, so they must wear something that allows them the freedom to stretch. Another cool thing about the way this elastic material is sewn in is that there isn't four seems all meeting near the crotch as is the case with most board shorts. This helps make The Flex Fighter shorts really comfortable.

It's been about a month since I first got my shorts and I still love them. They have triple stitched seams that haven't ripped, they never come loose or come off, there's nothing to get your fingers caught in, and they're really comfort-able. I definitely give Sprawl an A+ rating on The Flex Fighter shorts and would highly recommend them to anyone who loves to train.
